Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Long Island Renters

2 min read

On Long Island, the condition you leave a rental in often decides how much of your security deposit comes back. Cleaning is the most common deduction, and the most avoidable one. Work through the checklist below to leave the place spotless, and save the floors for last so you are not tracking back over cleaned areas.

Kitchen

Inside and outside of the oven, stovetop, and range hood. Inside the refrigerator and freezer, defrosted if your lease requires it. Inside every cabinet and drawer. Counters, backsplash, and sink scrubbed, and the dishwasher and microwave wiped inside and out.

Spotless empty kitchen after a move-out clean

Bathrooms Toilet, tub, shower, and tile scrubbed and disinfected. Grout cleaned and any mildew treated. Mirror, vanity, and cabinets cleaned inside and out, and hard-water buildup removed from glass and fixtures.
Every room and the floors

Wipe baseboards, door frames, and trim, and spot-clean walls for scuffs. Clean inside closets and shelving. Do the window sills, tracks, and interior glass, and dust fixtures, switches, and vents. Then, last, vacuum all carpet, sweep and mop hard floors into the corners, and clean where large appliances and furniture stood.

The spots landlords actually check

Inside the oven and fridge, the grime line behind the toilet, buildup in corners, and the marks left where furniture sat. Miss these and they become the reason for a deduction. Clean after your belongings are out and before the final walkthrough, since an empty home cleans best and you want it pristine at inspection.
